Pyrohiv Museum – is an open-air architectural and ethnographic complex, which means, that all the exhibits of the museum are located not in pavilions or other buildings, but in the open air, making the museum extremely attractive for tourists from all over the world. The museum presents with remarkable accuracy and reliability the memoirs of material culture of all regions of Ukraine.

Here you can not only spend weekends or weekdays and enjoy the holiday, but also see and buy real Ukrainian sovereigns: towels, traditional vyshyvanky and fashionable modern men’s, women’s and children’s embroidered clothes, folk toys, often you can hear authentic music and eat delicious national dishes. .

History of the Museum

Pyrohiv is a historic area on the territory of the Holosiivsky district of Kyiv, which takes its name from the village of the same name, which exists here since at least the seventeenth century.
Archaeological data give grounds to attribute the settlement of the territory to the Bronze Age.

The settlement is first mentioned as Pyrogivka in 1627 as a property of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. In 1720 it appears as the village of Pyrozhov, since 1957, within Kyiv.
According to research by scientists, it is in this place that the church and caves are older than in the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The area of the museum, formed by the activities of many generations, is rich in memorials of the archeology of the Paleolithic, Trypillian, Zarubintsy, etc.

Formation of the exposition of the museum’s future Pirogov began in 1969, and the author of the idea of creating the museum was Peter Timofeyevich Tronko.
The first turn of the museum’s exposition was opened in 1976, the second one in 1982.
A well-known researcher in the field of public construction V. Samoylovych, with the support of the leading ethnographer K. Guslasty, developed a perfectly ethnically-artistic concept and a thematic plan of museum. The competition for the best sketch project of the museum, which was represented by the famous architect P.Kostiško at the Faculty of Architecture, won the project of architect V.Romanov, who is the author of the exhibition “The Middle Dnieper”.

No educational institution was preparing at that time specialists to create such a museum. For this matter, real enthusiasts who loved and appreciated the folk culture: V. Baranco, S. Vergovsky, L. Gur, N. Zozulya, V. Krasenko, I. Mussatova, L. Orel, V. Romanov, R. Svirida, S.Smolinsky, S.Scherban and others.
The openings of the first exhibition took place on April 17, 1971. This was a hut from Krasnaya Popivka from Lugansk region.

In the 70s of the last century, the political situation in Ukraine was complicated. Foreign visitors were interested in the Ukrainian countryside, its way of life, but they were almost not allowed in the countryside, while the tourists from Kyiv were taken to the “show off village” – Ksaverivka.

At the time of the opening of the museum Pirogovo in 1976, its territory was 120 hectares, which contained more than 150 buildings – monuments of Ukrainian architecture and everyday life. All of them were grouped in 5 expositions: the Middle Dnipro, Poltava, Slobozhanschyna, Polissya and Podillya. The center of the museum is located on the top of the sixth exposition – a group of windmills. Second life received many unique phenomenons of world architecture brought to the museum.

In the process of forming the museum’s funds, exhibits had to be collected throughout the territory of Ukraine. So, it was possible to find and deliver to the museum a unique Ukrainian house of the 16th century, the oldest to date in all of Ukraine.

Museum’s team performed a huge expeditionary-searching work on the creation of architectural and artistic-household foundations and exhibitions in a short time before the opening in 1976.
To the museum there were also carried wooden churches, windmills and other architectural monuments and everyday life.

Some of the exhibits needed to create expositions could not be found, so they were restored under the guidance of historians with all the details. But the main fund of the museum consists of the architectural structures that have been preserved to date, which were created by Ukrainians many centuries ago.
