La Pedrera Casa Mila
Pere Mila and his wife Roser Segimon asked Antoni Gaudi to design this house in 1906 and it was finally completed in 1910. The couple did not move in though until October of 1911, when they received a certificate that it was okay to live on the main floor. The rest of the building was not ready for renters though until the following year.
The entire place created some controversy back then due to the stone façade and the wrought iron balconies that were twisted. However, it also was one of the first buildings to have a free floor plan, an underground garage, and a beautiful terrace up on the roof.
In 1946, the building was sold, and the new owner had the original two apartments on the first floor converted into five apartments. The attic laundry rooms were also converted to apartments. The main floor was then used by Northern, an insurance company, starting in 1966.
Over the years, this building began to fall apart, but in February of 1987, restoration work began to return La Pedrera Casa Mila to its original beauty.
La Pedrera Casa Mila Today
This building currently has five floors that are dedicated to the works of Antoni Gaudi. During the day, guests can take a tour of the roof terrace, including the stairways and chimneys, the old laundry area in the attic, the Pedrera apartment, the two courtyards, and the former residence of the Milas.
Up on the roof terrace, people will see spectacular views of Barcelona, but it will be the architecture that will take their breath away the most. Each element of the terrace seems to come to life as it shares the history of the entire building and how it was constructed and designed.
There are two hundred and seventy catenary arches up in the attic and in between them all is where visitors will see videos, plans, models, objects, and designs that Gaudi created. He was a genius when it came to creating, and implementing, his designs and there have been very few that have come close to his extraordinary abilities.
Inside the Pedrera apartment, there are furnishings and objects from the beginning of the 20th century. These are all items that were in place when a bourgeois family lived there all those years ago. While all those items are fascinating, many people will prefer focusing on the moldings, knobs, handles, and floor surfaces that Gaudi featured in the space.
Both courtyards are full of color, although most of it comes from the paintings on the walls. Everything reflects nature, and everyone will want to pay close attention to the details that are in place leading up to the main floor.
The Mila’s former apartment has been turned into an exhibition room and there are very few of the original features inside, because the décor was changed as soon as Gaudi died. However, guests will be able to see quite a few of the sculpted columns with their sea shapes and inscriptions as well as some beautifully decorated ceilings.
There is a special visual show available at night at La Pedrera Casa Mila and it contains numerous projections, special lighting, and even music out on the roof terrace. At the end of the show, guests can enjoy a glass of cava and some sweetmeats inside one of the courtyards. Guests can enjoy this show either on the same evening as their daytime visit, or they can choose a night up to three days after their initial visit.
Casa Mila Special Tours
One of the special tours that is available at La Pedrera Casa Mila is the Awakening Tour. This tour will allow guests to be one of the first people to see the house and the courtyards in the morning, before it is opened to the public. Guests will see all the flowers, trees, and rooms as the sun is starting to brighten and they will learn why Gaudi created this masterpiece. Anyone that takes this tour will be allowed into all the rooms from the regular tours, as well as a few that most people never see.
