THE MUSEUM

The Palais Galliera – a showcase for style
Housed in a Renaissance-style palace surrounded by an extensive garden, the Palais Galliera is just a short walk from the prestigious couture houses of Paris. Built at the end of the 19th century, the museum features an attractive stone façade built on a metal structure designed by Gustave Eiffel’s engineering company. The palace was first meant to house the private collection of Marie Brignole-Sale, Duchess of Galliera, but a different fate was in store for it in the end. Completed in 1894 after the death of the Duchess, the building was donated to the City of Paris while her collection of sculptures, paintings and precious objects were shipped off to Genoa, her home city. It was only much later, after numerous episodes that it became a museum of fashion in 1977.

THE COLLECTIONS

The Palais Galliera is the City of Paris Museum of Fashion
The museum’s collections are among the finest in the world, with more than 100 000 items of clothing and accessories. These artifacts reflect the dress codes and the clothing worn by people in France from the 18th century to the present day. Extravagant, rare, simple or practical, these garments offer an insight into the creative genius of fashion, even in its most contemporary forms. Preserved in the museum’s storehouses, this collection has been supplemented over the years by items acquired by the City of Paris or through the generosity of donors, such as individuals, couture houses and designers, benefits from expert attention.
