Established as the town’s local history collection, named after artist Károly Ferenczy, the museum was created in 1951. As a result of a comprehensive reorganization it was renamed again, this time to Ferenczy Museum Center. The Ferenczy Museum Center is a modern museum institution covering a wide range of exhibition halls and collections. It is unique of the Szentendre museum to have supervision of smaller separate museums, where we present the emblematic, decisive figures of modern Hungarian painting: Margit Anna, Imre Ámos, Jenő Barcsay, Béla Czóbel, János Kmetty, and Lajos Vajda.

The most popular affiliated institution of the FMC is the Kovács Margit Museum, which presents the small statues of the popular ceramic artist. In the cellar of the Trading House a recently opened permanent exhibition showcases the rich history of this small Baroque-style town.

ArtMill, converted from a deserted saw mill in historic downtown is the third largest exhibition space in Hungary today: this is where the temporary Hungarian and international exhibitions are displayed.

Szentendre is a dominant center of Hungarian modern and contemporary art. This position is the professional foundation of the Ferenczy Museum Center’s mission. Besides our literary, ethnographic, historic, and archaeological activities of a regional scope, true to Szentendre’s traditions, our fine arts collection holds has items from all over the country, and the related events have international reference.

The Ferenczy Museum Center runs a scientific workshop that allows not only conceptual, schematized research, but it also coordinates them vocationally. It registers data gained from research in various disciplines based on the Hungarian Scientific Academy’s standards and publishes them (online and in print) in the museum annals.
