Immerse yourself in the world of spices!

In Spicy’s Spice Museum you can trace the entire manufacturing process, from the cultivation to the finished product, on an area of about 350 square meters by the example of antique machines. Spacious arranged on an original storage floor, we show you well over 900 exhibits from the last five centuries that all tell spice history. Partially in trading units, as they come from the near and far abroad, partly presented in clay bowls on snuffle tables, all herbs and spices can be smoothed and smelled.

About museum

After the museum had been founded in 1991 nearby Hamburg-Mundsburg, in 1993 it was able to move into the „Speicherstadt“ (i.e. Store/Warehouse District).

The Spice Museum’s job is to inform the consumer about use, storage and quality of spices.

You are in a storehouse that is approx. 110 years old. The Storehouse Town of Hamburg is still the largest warehouse complex in the world. In former times spices were stored here; nowadays the shipment of spices takes place in the modern part of the harbour. Now, the Storehouse Town only stores very precious merchandise, like e.g. Oriental carpets. Hamburg is to be the biggest storage and shipment place for Oriental carpets in the world.

On about 350 m2 we show more than 900 exhibits originated from the last 5 centuries that will give you details about the different possibilities of application and processing of raw spices. Moreover, there are approx. 50 kinds of raw spices for smelling, touching and tasting, if you like. The spices are partly exposed in original packages (sacks or chests) such as they come from the different countries of origin or in small bowls.

We recommend starting your tour on the left side of the museum and then going once around.
Here you will learn about different spices and their countries of origin. In the showcases you will find many smaller exhibits originating from their countries of cultivation. During your tour you will see big, old machines used for processing and refining of spices. Most of them are made of wood. Nowadays, the use of these kind of machines is prohibited, since there are parts of the machine that may splinter off during processing and fall into the merchandise.

For some of spices we have shown their harvest and their processing by using visual material from the countries of origin. Unfortunately, because of lack of space, we cannot do so for all spices.

In the central part of the museum, the respective special exhibition can be seen. There are three changing special exhibitions a year. You will learn the respective subject from the exhibition poster positioned before the middle passage.

We hope you enjoy our museum and have a pleasant stay in Hamburg!
