The memorial museum of M. Bulgakov was founded in 1989 as a branch of the Museum of the History of Kyiv.

The house was transferred to the museum building No. 13 on the Andriivsky Descent. It was here that from 1906 to 1919 the family of the professor of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy A.I. Bulgakov lived (father of M. Bulgakov). Bulgakov’s youthful and student life took place in this building. He also returned from the front of the First World War here. In this house he worked as a doctor and took patients. Here he read his first stories. It was this house that became the centerpiece of Bulgakov’s first novel “The White Guard” and “Days of Turbines”.

In 1982 a memorial plaque was opened at the house. Since 1989 the house has been opened to visitors as a museum. The basis of the collection of the museum is 47 items of M. Bulgakov, collected for many years by the Kiev engineer (and subsequently – the first director of the museum A. Konchakovsky) and several hundred books, magazines, programs, theatrical tickets, letters of Bulgakov’s sister.

Subsequently, thanks to serious scientific work, the museum’s collection has grown to 4,000 memorial objects. Some exhibits have been brought from abroad. Today in the collection there are not only valuable photos of Kyiv period, but also 17 letters of M. Bulgakov, his personal belongings: drawings, books with autographs, glasses, ashtrays, pencil, Easter egg, testament to his wife, Bulgakov’s portraits, N. Zemsky’s diaries, typewritten variants his works with edits, all life-time publications, programs for lifetime performances and a large library of up to 4,000 editions, among which there is a publication in 36 languages.

The staff of the literary-memorial museum M. Bulgakov made a lot of effort to create the original concept of the museum. The idea was taken as the basis, which, as if “Bulgakov suggested” himself. After all, in the novel “White Guard” he “settled” his heroes – Turbines in this house. Here they “live” and now.

Since 2012, the museum hosts “Bulgakov Zbigovyska” – meetings of children with Ukrainian children’s writers. In 2015, another project – “Bulgakovsky Book Club” – was launched, in which literary, musical events, presentations, lectures and film shows were held. No less interesting is the project “Vhid z verandy”, which represents meetings with poets and writers.

The main exposition of the museum was opened in 1993.
