Château de la Buzine (Buzine Castle) is an historical mansion situated in an exceptional landscape. La Buzine was built in 1867, and it belonged to a rich family. Surrounded by hills, with its mansion and its park on acres of land, the property is a part of French history. Now it is also called Maison des cinématographies de la Méditerranée, it is dedicated to arts and culture, mainly films and cinema, offering a unique cinematic experience.
La Buzine is on the list of the places to see in the marvellous sunny region in the South East of France, called Provence.

La Buzine and Marcel Pagnol

Marcel Pagnol was born in 1895 in Aubagne, a small town in Provence near Marseilles, and he died in Paris in 1974. He was a very famous French writer, a film director and a member of the French Academy. When he was young, he taught English for a few years, between 1920 and 1927 before writing plays. His plays and films were very successful in the period between WW I and WW II. Just before WW II war broke out, he wanted to buy a property in the area in order to create film studios, like a “small French Hollywood” where his actors would meet and work. He bought La Buzine, not far from where he had spent his summer holidays with his parents and his brother, but because of the war, Marcel Pagnol never achieved his dream. La Buzine was invaded during the war and then it was sold, resold, abandoned for decades and in 1995 the City Council of Marseilles bought it. Finally, 60 years later, the property is now restored and dedicated to the cinema and to the life of its owner Marcel Pagnol.

La Buzine : a cultural place of interest for visitors

Visitors admire the precious design of the building, which is typical of the architecture of numerous mansions built on the outskirts of the city by the wealthy people of Marseilles at the end of the 19th century. The Castle combines various elements of different styles: neo-classical, baroque and gothic.
The building has been modernized and completely renovated, with the creation of a large concert hall for lectures, films, plays, concerts. La Buzine is a cultural place where there is a changing display of contemporary paintings and sculptures or photos in the galleries of the house. Guided tours are organized in French and also in different languages for visitors, allowing them to stroll in the stunning peaceful gardens, and to visit the magnificent mansion.

Visitors can also attend concerts, shows, films, theatre, workshops and lectures in the main hall which can seat 350 people. Visitors can enjoy concerts during an outdoor summer festival.

There is a library, and a book-shop where everything about Marcel Pagnol can be found. There is also a display of photos, and scenes from his first films: Marius, Fanny, and Cesar. His childhood memories La Gloire de mon père, Le Château de ma mère, -My Father’s Glory, My Mother’s Castle- were published in 1962,and they are linked with Le Château de la Buzine, the castle where his Mother had been so frightened . Most people in France have read the books or seen the films. ( My father’s Glory, My Mother’s Castle, film director :Yves Robert, 1992 ). His hero Marius is famous all over the world, with his desire to leave his fiancée and home town to sail all around the world.
