State Aviation Museum of Ukraine named after Antonov is one of the largest history-technical museums not only in Ukraine, but also in the whole Eastern Europe. It was solemnly opened in 2003 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of world aviation and the 80th anniversary of the National Aviation University of Ukraine. The museum is located on the territory of the former educational and aeronautical base (WATB) KIICA (now NAU), and the aircraft assigned to it became the nucleus of a civil aviation assembly.

The museum’s exposition is in constant development – from the initial 33 exhibits it has grown to more than 90 planes, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles, which were armed with the Air Force of the USSR and independent Ukraine, or operated in the Civil Aviation Fleet. Over the years State Aviation Museum has become the epicenter of culture and leisure on the state level, which was visited by more than a million Kyiv residents and guests of the city.

One more direction – samples of aviation armament, as well as the exposition of aircraft engines. In the actual funds of the museum there are presented the development of almost all leading aviation groups of the Soviet period – Tupolev, Yakovlev, Ilyushin, Antonov, Sukhoy, Mikoyan-Gurevich, Kamov, Mill, Beriyev, as well as replicas of the early twentieth century.

Exposition

The collections of planes Mikoyan and Gurevich, as well as the helicopters by Mill, presented in our collections are among the most complete in the world. There are also rare now MiG-15UTI and Mi-1M. And according to the number of experimental and individual boards, the museum is the second largest collection in the CIS – just after Russian Monino. In Zhuliany you can see the first experimental Il-86, the second experimental / first serial Il-18, the first serial Tu-104, pre-series Tu-134, as well as Tu-22M0 from the experimental series and others.

Sources

Sources of constant replenishment of a number of exhibits of the museum were aerodromes, on which the write-offs were preserved, – historical evidence of the development of domestic aviation. These machines were brought to the exposition by the efforts of Ukrainian aviation industry enterprises, and then they took their place at the site in Zhulyany airport. In many aircrafts, presented in the museum, the main systems still have the ability to work. In particular, all such electronics are functioning properly on such machines. Due to this, there is a big interest of the guests to visit IL-62 pilot booths and the Mi-8 helicopter. A special flavor to visit the museum is the close proximity of the existing airport “Kyiv” (Zhulyany), whose runway runs 100 meters behind a clear fence. Hence the take-off and landing give the audience an unforgettable experience.

Tough times

From the moment of creation and to this day on the territory of the Watk KIICA (NAU) have replaced one another many aircrafts and helicopters. Among them there were many unique cars worthy of taking the best places in the exposition of any aviation museum in the world. Ironically, they all died here – in Zhulyanah – sent for scrap in strict accordance with the demand of Gosplan to deliver non-ferrous metals. As soon as, due to various reasons, the plane became unsuitable for student training, it was waiting for a knife. Thus perished rare examples of experimental aircraft – Tu-110 Soviet-5600, D Tu-104H (TU-16g) USSR-L5411, the second flying prototype IL-62 Soviet-06,176 (003), the prototype Tu-124 Soviet-45000 and others .

At the beginning of the 1990s. Training airfield KICAE been exposed to the most natural, and at the same time the most destructive processes – exposure of time. During the whole decade, the planes lost their past appearance and became unsuitable, and the airdrome itself was covered with wild grass. The territory of the future museum during this period gradually turned into an air cemetery.

Changes to the best

The situation radically changed only in 2003, after, according to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to establish State Aviation Museum. In extremely tight deadlines, due to extensive cooperation with dozens of aviation companies throughout the country, museum was opened on September 30, 2003.

Reopening

Ceremony was attended by then President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma, representatives of domestic and foreign aviation community, as well as guests and representatives of numerous media. The first expert assessments were really positive – according to quality of exhibition State Aviation Museum is worthy to take a place in the top ten European museums. The development of the exposition of the State Museum of Aviation of Ukraine is constantly being continued. The existing technology is carefully preserved, new exhibits are sought, delivered to the museum, where they are taken care of.
